Hair Transplant Cost

Any doctor with MD or DO can do hair transplants. Hair restoration is not a recognized specialty or a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). You can verify the doctor’s board certification by visiting the ABMS Certification, the American Board of Surgery (ABS), the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) websites. You can also search the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) website, which lists doctors who are certified in hair restoration surgery. However, as pointed earlier, board certification is not a requirement to do hair transplants. Therefore, it is really important that you visit the surgeon for a consultation.

Most, if not all, hair transplant surgeons will offer free initial consultation. If they ask for a consultation fee, find someone else. The patient advisor will ask for your date of birth, name and telephone number before making an appointment. When you visit the surgeon, always ask him or her a lot of questions. How many years he or she has been doing hair transplant surgeries? How many they perform each year? Ask to see before-and-after pictures of their clients. Ask them to draw hairline. Take a picture of it.  Ask for the cost of the procedure in writing. It will help you later to compare and make an informed decision.

Here is the list of hair restoration surgeons I visited or communicated via email or skype.

Physicians Hair Restoration

Location: Charlotte, NC
Dr. name: Dr. Broc Pratt
Type of Procedure: FUE
Cost: $11,500

Dr. Pratt was the first surgeon I met for consultation. He is an experienced cosmetic surgeon. During the conversation, he told me that he doesn’t do FUE himself, but a couple of technicians will fly in from Houston to do the procedure. He will supervise them. The practice uses NeoGraft method, an automated hair transplant system used in FUE hair transplant. Due to the cost and the fact that I was leaning toward FUT (due to the extent of my hair loss), I decided not to go with him.

Koher Medical

Location: High Point, NC
Dr. name: Dr. Grant Koher
Type of Procedure: FUT
Cost: $9,500

I met with Bobbi, the patient advisor, in his Charlotte office. He is like Dr. Koher’s brand ambassador as his picture is displayed prominently on their website. He had FUT and showed me his scar on the back of his head. He answered all my questions and showed me several before-and-after photos of Dr. Koher’s clients.

Hair Restorations Center

Location: Boca Raton, FL
Dr. name: Dr. Glenn Charles
Type of Procedure: FUT
Cost: $3/graft

I contacted the Hair Restorations Center via email and the patient advisor immediately replied. I emailed her my pictures. She recommended FUT with 2500 grafts for a total cost of $7,500. I also received my photo with hairline drawn on it. Also, I was also offered travel reimbursement of up to $600.

Great Hair Transplants

Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Dr. name: Dr. Brett Bolton
Type of Procedure: FUT
Cost: $2,000 per 5 cm2 of hair follicles

Dr. Bolton is a very experienced surgeon. I emailed his patient advisor my photos. So for removing 30 cm2 of hair follicles from a donor area, it would cost $12,000. For FUT this is quite expensive, even with a 15% discount and up to $1000 travel allowance I was offered.

Natural Transplants

Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Dr. name: Dr. Matt Huebner
Type of Procedure: FUT
Cost: $8,000 for 30 cmx1 cm strip

I met with Dr. Huebner via Skype. He came highly recommended from someone I knew who had his hair transplant done from him. I have spinal muscular atrophy, a degenerative neuromuscular disorder, because of which I am in a wheelchair. When I shared my disability with him, he immediately said he had seen several patients when he was an emergency room physician. During the 30 minutes consultation, he answered all my questions very patiently. After the Skype consultation, his patient advisor reached out to me with the $8000 quote for out-of-state patients. He also offered travel reimbursement of up to $1000.

Advanced Hair Transplant

Location: Charlotte, NC
Dr. name: Dr. Bruce Marko
Type of Procedure: FUT
Cost: $10,000; $7,500 (November promotion)

My final consultation was with Dr. Bruce Marko. dr-markoMarko has been practicing hair transplant surgery for more than 16 years. I met with Dr. Marko at his clinic. After evaluating my hair, he suggested I am between 5 and 6 on Norwood scale and recommended transplanting 2500 grafts. Due to considerable hair loss, he told me that he wouldn’t be able to transplant hairs on the crown. The before-and-after results from his previous clients were great. He was not worried about my disability and spent more than 30 minutes answering my questions. I also asked him to draw the hairline. His patient advisor, Lee Millard, reached out to me after the consultation and offered me the promotional rate, and I decided to go with him. I did receive offers to match Dr. Marko’s quote but I did not change my mind. I liked Dr. Marko’s results. I did not have to travel far for the surgery. Also, he is certified with the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. Evidently, I did not find a lot of reviews online about his practice. That’s why it is so important to meet the hair transplant surgeon in-person.

The cost of a hair transplant depends on different factors such as the extent of hair loss, your health condition, the hair transplant technique selected, the experience of the surgeon, etc. So, it is not possible to get an effective hair transplant at a cost lower than the market price. Thus, always look for one that provides ultimate services at reasonable price!

I agree with you Deepak. But there is little transparency in how the cost is calculated. There is wide variation in the cost of hair transplant surgeries. How would one determine a “reasonable” price? Ultimately it comes down to personal choice.
